Holidays in Bulgaria

Planning the perfect beach holiday on the Black Sea coast? Or perhaps you fancy hiking through beautiful mountains? Maybe you love culture and enjoy visiting historical sites? Then Bulgaria is an ideal destination for you.

What you should see in Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a captivating holiday destination. With Sofia as its cultural hub, you can expect a lively metropolis teeming with culture, joie de vivre, and the modern face of Bulgaria. Meanwhile, Plovdiv boasts a magnificent old town and numerous ancient sites, including an amphitheatre. The Rila Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, should also be on your Bulgaria bucket list. Its magnificent architecture and famous frescoes will inspire you.Ā

You'll be transported to the Middle Ages in Veliko Tarnovo, the former capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. In Burgas, you'll encounter an upbeat, almost Mediterranean vibe, while in Kazanlak, in the Rose Valley, you can learn all about the production of the famous Bulgarian rose oil.

These are Bulgaria's top travel destinations

Bulgaria is a country rich in history and culture, with breathtaking scenery and warm-hearted people. There is so much to see and experience.Ā

Sofia, the vibrant metropolisĀ  Ā

A trip to Sofia is a must on any Bulgarian holiday. The capital is perfect for a city break and an excellent excursion destination. Here, Bulgarian tradition meets modernity. Highlights include the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Boyana Church, and the National History Museum.Ā

The Black Sea coast – from golden beaches to sunny shoresĀ

Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast has a lot to offer, especially Golden Sands, Sunny Beach, and Nessebar. Crystal-clear water, sunshine, and a lively atmosphere create the perfect holiday vibe. In the evening, the beaches come alive with diverse entertainment for those in the mood to celebrate.

The Rhodope Mountains – hiking in unspoilt natureĀ

Bulgaria is more than just the Black Sea coast and its capital – it also boasts stunning mountain landscapes. In the Pirin, Rila, and Rhodope regions, you'll find ideal conditions for hiking and climbing. The best part: The trails are not overcrowded, allowing you to enjoy nature in peace.

Varna, the pearl of the Black SeaĀ

Varna combines a beach holiday with cultural experiences and offers a deep insight into the Bulgarian way of life. If you're interested in sightseeing, you'll find Roman baths and the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Mary in Varna. For rainy days, the Archaeological Museum is a perfect change of pace.Ā

When is the best time to visit Bulgaria?

If you're drawn to the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, the ideal time for a holiday is between June and August. The sea is warm then, but with temperatures often above 30 degrees Celsius, it still provides a refreshing way to cool off. For hiking, spring and autumn are perfect, with their mild but not too hot temperatures.Ā

What can I do in Bulgaria?

In Bulgaria, it’s easy to seamlessly combine a beach holiday with hiking and cultural enjoyment, often even within a single day.Ā

Ā

Hiking around the Rila Lakes

Close to the Rila Monastery, a chairlift takes you to the seven Rila Lakes, which you can hike around in several hours. Fresh mountain air, breathtaking views and unspoilt nature await you there. Another highlight: a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Rila Monastery after your tour.

Visit the ā€œWhite Castleā€

In the north-west of Bulgaria lies Belogradchik, the ā€˜White Castle’ - an impressive rock formation of around 200 limestone towers. Their bizarre shapes stimulate the imagination. A highlight: the fortress built into the rocks, the remains of which you can explore on an excursion.

Nature in the Pirin National Park

Away from the coast, unspoilt nature awaits you in the Pirin Mountains. The dense mountain forests of the nature park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, invite you to go hiking. In winter, a nearby ski resort with perfect pistes beckons.

Devetaki Cave: The enchanted caves in the Balkan MountainsĀ  Ā

Near the village of Devetaki, nature has crafted an impressive cave landscape in the mountains. These caves, towering dozens of metres high, allow light to filter in through large openings. Archaeologists have discovered that people inhabited this almost magical place over 70,000 years ago.Ā

The most beautiful beaches in Bulgaria

Bulgaria's Black Sea coast is perfect for a beach holiday.

Golden Sands

Golden Sands is the most famous beach in Bulgaria. Here you can swim, snorkel, or bathe in the crystal-clear water. For more action, there are plenty of opportunities to hire a jet ski or try parasailing. At night, the parties kick off.

Sunny Beach

Sunny Beach is almost directly adjacent to Golden Sands. It offers perfect conditions for sunbathing or a quick dip in the refreshing, clear, deep blue waters of the Black Sea. This gently sloping beach is a bit quieter than Golden Sands, making it ideal for a family holiday by the sea.Ā

The beach of Sozopol

This beach combines a gorgeous sandy stretch with the historic backdrop of Sozopol. The fine sand and clear water create an immediate holiday atmosphere. You'll find many restaurants and bars along the beach promenade, perfect for a meal or a refreshing drink or ice cream.

Duni Beach

A bit further away, Duni beach is also on the Black Sea coast. With a gently sloping shore is perfect for small children to paddle in and the wide sections of beach offer ample space for peaceful sunbathing.Ā
