Top Destinations for your holiday in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a lush, verdant country, where nature takes centre stage. Consequently, the top destinations in Costa Rica are primarily within its stunning natural landscapes. With San José as your central hub, you can easily embark on adventures across the country from this vibrant city.

San José

The lively capital of Costa Rica is nestled in the Valle Central between high mountains and volcanoes. The picturesque streets of the colonial-style old town are real gems. The National Theatre, located in the Plaza de la Cultura in San José, shines in classicist style.

National Parks - the stars of the country

National parks are the biggest highlights in Costa Rica. A visit to the Manuel Antonie National Park combines dream beaches with an unrivalled natural landscape. Waterfalls, extinct volcanoes, monkeys jumping around and sloths hanging cosily from trees await you.

Monteverde Cloud Forest

An essential is the Monteverde Cloud Forest. This forest is considered one of the most biodiverse places in the world. Hiking here, you’ll see monkeys and sloths, colourful birds, and magnificent butterflies. To learn more about Costa Rica’s flora and fauna, we recommend a guide tour.

When is the Best Time to Visit Costa Rica?

The best time to visit Costa Rica depends on what you plan to do there. For beach and swimming holidays, the dry season from December to April is ideal. Temperatures range between 25 and 30°C, with nearly continuous sunshine and only occasional rain.

If you’re keen to explore nature and see spectacular waterfalls in the interior of the country, the rainy season is perfect. Temperatures remain relatively high, but it rains frequently. During this time, the trees and shrubs are in full bloom, and you’re more likely to spot wildlife.

Bustling Cities and Abundant Nature: What to do in Costa Rica

Costa Rica enjoys a high standard of living for Central America, which is fitting as the name translates to “rich coast.” It’s no wonder Costa Rica is often called the “Switzerland of Central America.”

In addition to its breathtaking natural scenery, Costa Rica boasts many vibrant cities and charming towns.

Hike in the national parks

Manuel Antonio, located on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, features some of the country’s most beautiful beaches, rainforests, waterfalls, and a variety of wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, and toucans. Here, you can perfectly combine active holidays with relaxing at the beach.

Zip-Line through the cloud forest

Monteverde Cloud Forest, situated in northwestern Costa Rica, is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. The most thrilling way to experience this diversity is on a zip-line course, where you can soar through the forest canopy.

Observe Sea Turtles

Tortuguero National Park, located on Costa Rica’s northeastern Caribbean coast, is home to majestic sea turtles that can live up to 70 years or more. Visit during the nesting season when the turtles come ashore to lay their eggs – an unforgettable experience.

Take a trip to La Fortuna

If you’re visiting Arenal Volcano and its national park, be sure to make a stop in La Fortuna. In this small town, you can enjoy delicious local cuisine or a great cup of coffee after soaking in thermal springs or hiking through the natural park.

Surfing in Puerto Viejo

One of the Caribbean coast's most charming towns: Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. This picturesque town boasts excellent surfing conditions, thanks to Costa Rica's largest waves, known as the “Salsa Brava.” The perfect place to unwind with a cool drink while soaking in the vibrant local atmosphere

Caribbean or Pacific? The best beaches in Costa Rica

With nearly 300 beaches, Costa Rica offers perfect conditions for a successful beach or snorkelling holiday. What’s special is that some of the most beautiful beaches are on the Caribbean Sea, while others are on the Pacific Ocean.

Playa Manuel Antonio - white sand beach

The beach is located around 3 hours' drive south of San José, in the Manuel Antonio National Park on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Wite sand, crystal-clear water and lush green vegetation in the background. Playa Manuel Antonia is ideal for snorkelling and swimming.

Playa Conchal - golden sand beach

Situated on the northern coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, Playa Conchal is known for its distinctive golden sand made of crushed shells. This beach is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and surfing.

Playa Tamarindo - beaches and nightlife

Located on the Pacific coast in Guanacaste Province, Playa Tamarindo boasts long sandy beaches, great waves for surfers, and a lively nightlife. It’s the perfect spot for those who love surfing, staying active, and enjoying evening entertainment from sunset until the early hours.

Playa Montezuma - a natural spectacle

Situated on the southwestern coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, Playa Montezuma offers a true natural experience. This nearly untouched beach features white sand, crystal-clear, azure waters on one side, and lush green rainforest on the other. It’s a paradise for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing.
