Top destinations and regions in Portugal

Portugal is a welcoming and diverse travel destination. Naturally, the coasts of the Algarve and the areas between Porto and Lisbon are the top highlights for tourists from all over the world.

Lisbon – The shining metropolis on the Tagus

Portugal’s capital has a long history and is more vibrant than ever today. Whether it's the former working-class neighbourhood of Alfama or the chic Bairro Alto, there's something to see around every corner. You can enjoy breathtaking views of the city from the numerous viewpoints.

Grand buildings in Sintra

Just a few minutes' drive from Lisbon lies Sintra. This place is known for the Palácio Nacional de Pena, the Quinta da Regaleira with its park, and the Palácio de Monserrate. Perched on a rocky outcrop, these buildings are not only impressive but also tell the rich history of Portugal.

Porto – "Capital" of Port Wine

While Coimbra and Lisbon are known as the cradles of Fado, Porto is the metropolis of the famous Port wine. But the city has much more to offer. The historic old town with its narrow, colourful houses is a must-see. Crossing the Dom Luís I Bridge is a must during a visit to Porto.

Algarve

Stunning Algarve

In the south of the country, the Algarve is a must-visit. Be sure to visit the southernmost tip of the country at Sagres or be enchanted by the rock formations of Ponta da Piedade in Lagos.

When is the best time to visit Portugal?

The best conditions for a perfect beach holiday in the Algarve are between June and August. However, September can also be warm enough for swimming, and the prices are lower. Spring and autumn are ideal for sightseeing, hiking, or cycling. Surfing enthusiasts continue to visit the rugged coast in the rainy winter months.

What is there to do in Portugal?

In Portugal, you can enjoy water sports, experience local culture, relax on the beach, visit one of the many cafes, and much more.

Hike the coast of the Algarve

If you're fit and want to explore the Algarve mainly on foot, the Rota Vicentina long-distance hiking trail is a great option. It runs along the coast of the Algarve and offers you impressive views of the coast and the deep blue sea.

Wine tasting in the Douro Valley

The land becomes more mountainous behind Porto. Here, the grapes for wonderfully fruity red wines and the famous Port wine are grown. It's best to leave your car behind if you decide to go on a wine tasting tour through the Douro Valley.

Festival season around Lisbon

In the summer, numerous music festivals take place in and around Lisbon. Events like Fado festivals or the famous "Rock in Rio Lisboa" are happening. During these times, the already lively city becomes even more vibrant, attracting music fans from all over the world.

Go surfing near Lisbon

The coastline north of Lisbon with Praia do Norte in Nazaré, west with Praia de Carcavelos, or south with Costa da Caparica is very popular with surfers and wave riders. Here, you'll usually find optimal conditions for surfing or wave riding.

The most beautiful beaches in Portugal

Portugal is renowned for its stunning beaches, offering everything from golden sands to dramatic cliffs. The Algarve region is home to some of the country's most famous beaches. Whether you're looking to relax or surf, Portugal's beaches provide the perfect setting for every kind of beachgoer.

Praia da Marinha, Algarve

This beach is one of the most stunning beaches in Europe. The tides have created impressive rock formations here, with small sandy coves nestled within them. At some points, you can walk under the rocks at low tide, where domes with openings to the sky have formed over time.

Praia da Rocha, Algarve

Near Portimão, this long sandy beach stretches out. It's nestled in the typical coastal cliffs of the Algarve and offers plenty of space for families with children. There are also restaurants and bars nearby to refresh yourself and have a snack.

Praia de Arrifana, Algarve

If you're drawn to surfing in the Algarve, this beach is the perfect destination. Expect big waves and lots of wind here. There are also quieter areas suitable for swimming and bathing.
